Frequently Asked Questions
-
Not in the traditional or performative sense. The Bias Adjuster takes an intersectional, science-based approach to understanding and mitigating unconscious bias across race, gender, age, disability, sexuality, religion and other identities because better decisions require considering the full complexity of people.
Rather than focusing on awareness alone, we embed evidence-based bias mitigation into high-impact organizational processes and measure outcomes before, during, and after implementation so you can demonstrate measurable improvements in decision quality.
-
Success is measured through changes in employee thinking and behavior that improve decision-making, performance, and engagement. Before implementation, Dr. Gibson works with leadership to define success metrics that are directly tied to your organization's business goals.
These metrics are tracked before, during and after implementation to measure progress and impact. The goal is to create meaningful behavioral, cognitive and socio-emotional change while helping organizations reduce the risks associated with a biased workplace culture.
-
Not necessarily. The online course is designed to integrate seamlessly into your existing learning management system (LMS), or we can provide a customized link so employees can easily access the training without disrupting your current processes.
When it comes to organizational policies and procedures, we don't recommend change for the sake of change. We identify the specific decision-making processes that may be exposing your organization to unnecessary risk because of unconscious bias. From there, we streamline targeted improvements that are practical, efficient and easy to integrate into your existing systems, minimizing disruption while strengthening decision quality and reducing risk.
-
Organizations looking to reduce risk, strengthen leadership and improve decision quality across hiring, promotion, governance and performance evaluation.
-
Yes. Organizations can begin with onboarding and training, then scale into assessment and implementation support as needed.
-
No. The framework can be tailored to organizations of different sizes and levels of maturity.
-
You will receive a welcome email with everything you need to get started, including a course access link that you can share with your employees.
Using that link, employees will create their own accounts and register for the course. From there, they can immediately begin their learning journey in The Bias Adjuster School, our online learning platform powered by Thinkific.
The onboarding process is simple, allowing your team to get started quickly with minimal administrative effort.
-
The Bias Adjuster provides organizations with a monthly training report that includes employee enrollment, course progress, and completion status.
Reports are delivered at the end of each month, making it easy to monitor participation, support accountability, and document training completion for your organization's records.
If additional reporting is needed, customized reports can also be provided upon request.
-
The Bias Adjuster Organizational Risk Assessment is a confidential, anonymous survey consisting of approximately 20–30 questions that employees complete online. A secure assessment link is distributed to employees, and responses are collected through the Jotform platform. No personally identifying information is collected, allowing employees to provide honest feedback about their workplace experiences.
Once data collection is complete, responses are aggregated and analyzed to identify patterns across groups and organizational processes. Individual responses are never shared. Instead, organizational leaders receive a comprehensive report highlighting areas of organizational risk, statistically meaningful group differences, and evidence-based recommendations to mitigate bias, strengthen decision-making, and improve organizational outcomes.
The assessment provides organizations with actionable insights that help prioritize interventions where they will have the greatest impact.
-
Yes. Dr. Gibson works collaboratively with organizational leaders to ensure the training addresses your team's unique goals and challenges. She begins by scheduling a working session with key stakeholders to understand your organization's priorities, culture, and areas of concern.
Using those insights, Dr. Gibson customizes the online course and/or workshop content to address your organization's specific needs. Before the training is delivered, she meets with the leadership team again to review the customized program, ensure it aligns with your objectives, and make any final refinements.
This collaborative process ensures the training is relevant, practical, and focused on the decision-making challenges that matter most to your organization.

You will learn what your IAT scores mean, how unconscious bias develops, how it can affect decision-making, and practical, research-based strategies to reduce its influence in everyday life and the workplace.

You will have access to Dr. Bentley Gibson throughout The Bias Adjuster online course to ask questions and deepen your understanding of the science. You can also participate in discussions with other learners in a safe, respectful, and judgment-free environment if you choose.
Questions about the Implicit Association Test
-
You will take this test as a part of your online course work. The IAT measures automatic associations between social groups, such as race or gender, and concepts, such as good or bad. It measures unconscious associations, not your character, values or beliefs. Human behavior is complex, and unconscious bias is just one factor that influences our decisions. However, when we are unaware of these automatic associations, they can quietly lead to poor decision-making. The Bias Adjuster online course will help you understand what your results do and do not mean and how to apply them to better decision-making.
-
Dr. Bentley Gibson did not create the IAT, but she has studied it extensively for over a decade. The Implicit Association Test (IAT) was first introduced in 1998 by researchers at Harvard University, the University of Washington, and the University of Virginia. Today, it is the world's most widely used measure of unconscious bias and has been the subject of thousands of research studies across psychology, medicine, business, education and other fields.
One challenge with the Project Implicit website is that after completing the assessment, participants are typically given only a brief list of frequently asked questions before interpreting their results on their own. As a result, many people leave feeling confused, defensive, or discouraged.
Dr. Bentley Gibson recognized this gap and created The Bias Adjuster online course to provide the scientific context that is often missing. Rather than leaving you to interpret your results alone, the course explains what the research says, what your scores do and do not mean, and how unconscious bias fits into the much broader picture of human behavior and decision-making. You'll also have the opportunity to ask questions, engage in thoughtful discussion, and learn directly from an expert in implicit bias research in a supportive, judgment-free environment.
-
No. An IAT score does not determine whether you are prejudiced or a bad person. Our unconscious associations are shaped by our experiences, culture, and media, and they often differ from our conscious beliefs. The goal is awareness, not judgment.
-
No. A single IAT score cannot predict your behavior. Human behavior is influenced by many factors. The IAT simply identifies where unconscious bias could influence your decisions so you can make more intentional choices.
-
That is a common reaction. Your results are not a verdict on who you are. They are an opportunity to better understand how your brain processes information. The Bias Adjuster online course will help you interpret your results through the science of unconscious bias.
-
Yes. Your IAT results are anonymous and confidential. Only you will see your individual scores. Be sure to save or screenshot your results before leaving the page because Project Implicit does not store them.
